ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – Christopher Newport’s women’s lacrosse team was defeated by the Seahawks of St. Mary’s College in their final game of the regular season on Wednesday afternoon.  The Captains were beaten by a final score of 14-9.

The Captains found themselves in an early 6-0 hole, but CNU was able to stay close with SMC, trailing 11-5 at the half.  CNU’s first-half offensive effort was paced by Mea Arnold and Liz Klemens, scoring two goals each; as well as Kaitlin Quigley who tacked on a goal of her own.

In the second half, the Captains would give up three goals in a row to fall into another deep deficit at 14-5.  CNU would make a come-back effort, scoring four unanswered goals to close out the game, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Seahawks finished on top by a final of 14-9.  Christopher Newport goals came from Meghan Harkey, who put two in the net, and one each from Chrissy Rogers and Alyssa Burke.  Rogers and Harkey also added one assist a piece, while Katie Dougherty posted three on the day.

In goal, Colleen Simpson posted 5 saves for the Seahawks, while CNU’s Gayle Robinson notched 10 saves for the day.

With the loss the Captains fall to 9-5 on the year and will head to Burlington, NC for the USA South Conference Tournament, where they will face Shenandoah this Friday at 1:00pm.
