NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Persevering through hardships at the start of her career as a volleyball student-athlete for Christopher Newport University, Captains' sophomore defensive specialist Rebecca Dancy was recently awarded the inaugural Casey Martin CNU Volleyball Commitment Award.
After suffering a serious injury at the beginning of her freshman campaign, she decided to take a medical redshirt, go through extensive rehabilitation, enabling her to return to the top of her game. This year's winner of the Casey Martin Commitment Award has made a huge impact on this year's team with unparalleled commitment and dedication to her teammates and the development of the program.
The award, named after Casey Martin, a former student-athlete, student assistant coach, and a current assistant coach, will be presented each year to a student-athlete with immeasurable commitment to the CNU Volleyball program.
“One of the most selfless players CNU Volleyball has been blessed to have....one of the hardest working players on the team...and without a doubt, a great teammate,” stated eighth-year head coach Lindsay Birch.
On the court, Dancy has seen action in 31 matches for the Captains this fall. For her efforts both on and off the court, she was honored with a spot on the USA South Athletic Conference's All-Sportsmanship team.
