Women's Lacrosse Falls 18-7 To No. 15 Catholic In NCAA Play

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s women’s lacrosse squad had its season come to a close Wednesday with an 18-7 loss to Catholic in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

 

The Cardinals scored the first three goals of the game and led 6-4 with 8:53 left in the first half. CUA went on to score eight straight to take a 14-4 lead with 18:10 to play in the game.

 

The Captains answered with two straight to cut the deficit to eight goals, but Catholic answered by scoring four in a row to increase its lead to 12, 18-6. Christopher Newport scored one more for the final margin.

 

Marcy Cuneo led the Cardinals with five goals. Kate Robinson added three goals and two assists while Laura Haring contributed three scores. Katie Bitonti finished with two goals and one helper as Kate Narzikul finished with one goal and one assist. Meghan Sabo, Lindsay Davenport, Becky Borrell and Lauren Sheils added one goal each.

 

Bonnie Hansen and Meghan Harkey led CNU with two goals each. Katie Doherty added one goal and one assist. Natalie Gilbert and Kaitlin Quigley each scored once. Lisa Thomson finished with one helper.

 

CUA out-shot Christopher Newport, 44-20. Rachel Giljam had 17 saves in the cage for the Captains. The Cardinals Melissa Brashear finished with 10 stops.

 

Catholic improves to 16-4 and will meet Rowan in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Captains finish the year with the program’s best record at 13-6.
