NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics C.J. Woollum today announced the promotion of Carolyn Raveia to Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach. Raveia had served as interim coach of the Captains for the 2008 season.
“We were very blessed to have Coach Raveia on board when Kwame Lloyd left for a head coaching position at Vermont,” Woollum said. “She stepped in and led her team to a conference championship and the NCAA Tournament. We knew that she could recruit, and she proved this season she could coach. We’re extremely fortunate to have Carolyn Raveia as Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach and look forward to many years of success.”
Raveia, a native of Fairfax, Virginia, was named the USA South Coach of the Year after guiding the Captains to a 13-6 record this spring as interim coach. CNU also had a 4-0 mark in the USA South, and won the conference tournament to advance to the NCAA’s for the third straight season.
“It’s very exciting to be able to continue coaching at Christopher Newport,” Raveia said. “I’ve had tremendous support from the entire athletic department and my players this past year, and I’m looking forward to continuing the great success of the program.”
Raveia is a 2007 graduate of Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. She was hired as an assistant with the Captains, and took over the program on an interim basis following the departure of Kwame Lloyd. Lloyd left CNU to become Head Women’s Soccer Coach at the University of Vermont.
The 13-6 record posted this spring represented the highest win total in the eight-year history of the women’s lacrosse program at CNU.
“We have a strong core of returning players,” Reveia continued. “Those players include this year’s conference Player of the Year (Katie Doherty) and Rookie of the Year (Megan Harkey). I’m really excited about taking the program to the next level.”
