Track & Field Results From The New Captains Classic
Rachael Clark tied a 22-year old school record in the shot put and qualified automatically for nationals.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s track & field squad hosted the 2008 New Captains Classic Saturday on the Belk Track at POMOCO Stadium.

 

Rachael Clark qualified automatically for the NCAA Championships in the shot put with a toss of 14.72 meters, tying the school’s 22-year old record. Clark also finished first in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.41 meters, which is good enough for second all-time in program history.

 

In the 100 meter dash, Sheronda Rose finished seventh with a time of 13.79 meters. Brooke Rowe was second in the 800 in 2:40.54.

 

In the 5000, Amy Wampler finished second with a time of 18:31.04. Liz Bissell (19:02.75) was third, Beth Bartlemes (19:46.40) placed fourth, Megan Roberts (19:57.64) finished sixth and Edie Nault (20:13.97) was seventh.

 

Christin Didlake finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.50 meters. Kelsey Farmers placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 10.17 meters. Sarah Hawley was sixth with a throw of 8.17 meters.

 

Clark also finished fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 35.88 meters. Farmer placed sixth with a toss of 33.02 meters. Farmer also finished third in the hammer with a throw of 40.90 meters. Hawley placed third in the javelin with a throw of 26.50 meters while Farmer was fourth with a throw of 22.49 meters.

 

On the men’s side, Leroy Harper qualified provisionally in the 100 for the NCAA Championships with a time of 10.77 and finished fourth.

 

Charles Washington also qualified provisionally for the outdoor championships in the 200 meter run with a time of 21.70, good enough for fifth all-time in school history.

 

In the 800, Kyle Oakes won the event with a time of 1:55.18. Matt Winkler (2:00.82) was fifth while Joshua Simmons (2:04.95) placed sixth.

 

David Woodson took home the top spot in the 1,500 meter run with a mark of 4:01.58 while Jack Tierney placed second in 4:06.96. Woodson’s time moves him into fifth place all-time at CNU.

 

Nathaniel Huffman was second in the 5,000 with a time of 16:25.94 and Frank McCracken was fourth in 16:57.94.

 

Matt Griffis placed third in the 400 hurdles in 58.47. Daniel Swale was fourth in 1:02.96.

 

The Captains A 4X400 squad finished first in 3:18.48 while the B squad was second in 3:33.14.

 

In the high jump, Joseph Owens tied for second with a leap of 2.00 meters.

 

Ryan Gordon broke his own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.67 meters. He also finished second in the shot put with a mark of 14.78 meters.

 

Cameron Chaplin finished third in the hammer with a mark of 41.66 meters. His throw ranks him fourth all-time in program history. Chris Banks (41.31m) finished fourth and Edward Hickey (31.91m) was fifth. Hickey also placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 34.57 meters.

 

The Captains return to action Monday when they head to Swarthmore, PA for the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet.
