Big Weekend For Christopher Newport Athletics
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Get ready for a big weekend at Christopher Newport University. The CNU athletic department has two teams and two individuals involved in NCAA Tournament action, and both the men’s and women’s basketball seasons starting up.
In NCAA men’s soccer play, the Captains will host one of four “Sweet 16” sectionals this Saturday and Sunday. Steve Shaw’s squad will play at 3:30 Saturday against Emory University. In the opening game at 1 pm, Montclair State plays Messiah. The winners on Saturday will play Sunday at 3 pm.
Tickets will be available at Captains Field, and prices are $6 for General Admission. Senior Citizens, Students and Children are $3 each. Christopher Newport students with a valid Student ID will be admitted free.
The Christopher Newport football squad will be on the road Saturday in the NCAA Tournament opening round. The Captains play in suburban Pittsburgh against Washington & Jefferson at 12 noon. Cross Country runners David Woodson and Amy Wampler travel to Hanover, IN for the NCAA Cross Country Championships as representatives from Christopher Newport. The two qualified for Nationals by virtue of their respective finishes at the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals.
The CNU women’s basketball team opens the 2008/2009 season on Friday,
playing at Lynchburg at 7 pm.
The Christopher Newport men’s basketball team begins its 2008/2009 season Saturday night at the Freeman Center. The Captains will host Southern Virginia at 7:30 pm.
